Biography
Nyaruach is a South Sudanese singer and lyricist whose music draws on the traditional sounds and culture of South Sudan.
Born around 1983 in Southern Sudan during the civil war, Nyaruach was separated from her immediate family at a young age, including her brother, musician Emmanuel Jal. The siblings reunited in Nairobi in 2004 and went on to record “Gua,” a song whose title means “peace” in their native Nuer language. The song was broadcast by the BBC across Africa and became a hit in Kenya in 2005.
In 2013, Nyaruach represented South Sudan as part of The Nile Project, collaborating with musicians from across the Nile region during a residency in Aswan, Egypt.
Nyaruach later reunited musically with Emmanuel Jal for the collaborative album Naath. The project draws on South Sudanese musical traditions, folklore and contemporary Afrobeat influences, with songs including “Gatluak,” “Gore” and “Ti Chuong.”
Alongside her music, Nyaruach has spoken publicly about the experiences and rights of women and girls from South Sudan, using her platform to advocate for greater awareness and opportunity.
