Right One

Bravo Kiss is back with “Right One,” a relaxed and romantic Afropop record that shows exactly why the South Sudanese artist deserves attention.

Built around love and finding the right person, the song is anchored by a simple but memorable chorus: “she says she’s in love, she fell in love with the right one.” It’s the kind of hook that sticks quickly, carried by Bravo Kiss’ melodic delivery and the laid-back feel of the production.

But what immediately stands out about “Right One” is its attention to detail.

The production feels polished from beginning to end. Sonically, the record sits comfortably within the wider Afropop and Afrobeats landscape, with a level of finish that allows it to stand alongside contemporary releases from across the African music scene.

Bravo Kiss still makes sure the record sounds like him.

While much of “Right One” is delivered in English, he returns to his roots by switching into Nuer for part of the song. It’s something that has become an important part of his music: rather than choosing between reaching a wider audience and representing where he comes from, Bravo Kiss finds space for both.

That balance is one of the most interesting things about “Right One.” A listener unfamiliar with Bravo Kiss could easily hear the record simply as a polished modern Afropop release. Then the Nuer verse arrives and gives the song an identity distinctly connected to South Sudan.

The same attention to detail carries into the visuals. “Right One” arrives with a high-production music video built around the song’s romantic theme, with its central relationship reflecting the idea behind the record.

For The Suso, this was one of those releases that demanded coverage. The production was the first thing that stood out, but the complete package — the songwriting, melodic performance, visuals and Bravo Kiss’ ability to bring Nuer into a contemporary Afropop record — makes “Right One” feel considered from beginning to end.

More importantly, records like “Right One” show that South Sudanese artists don't have to leave their identity behind to make music capable of travelling beyond the South Sudanese audience. Bravo Kiss sounds at home in contemporary Afropop while still making room for his language and roots.

“Right One” is a love song, but it is also another example of what Bravo Kiss can do when strong production meets his melodic style.
